An author of fiction novels, admired for his writings about northern
Michigan, will be sharing his works with the CMU community this week.

Jack Driscoll, writer-in-residence at the Interlochen Arts Academy in
Interlochen is scheduled to read from his fiction at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Anspach
Hall 256.

Eric Torgersen, professor of English at CMU, said the creative writing
faculty invited Driscoll to visit CMU because of its great admiration for
Driscoll’s works.

"We invited him on the basis of knowing his (collection of) short
stories, ‘Wanting Only to be Heard,’" Torgersen said.

Torgersen said Driscoll’s stories are set in northern Michigan and represent
the area wonderfully.

"I think he is one of the most widely admired fiction writers in
Michigan," he said.

Driscoll’s collection of short stories is a past winner of the Associated
Writing Programs Award in Short Fiction.

Driscoll will sign copies of his recently published novel "Lucky
Man, Lucky Woman" following the reading, Torgersen said.

"Lucky Man, Lucky Woman," winner of the Pushcart Book Editor’s
Award and the Barnes and Noble Discover Award, is a love story about marriage
in the middle years.

According to a press release, the Pushcart Book Editors’ Award is a prize
established for rescuing books that "have fallen through the cracks."

"Lucky Man, Lucky Woman" was accepted for publication by a
major publisher years ago, but was canceled at the last minute due to "a
shakeup in the publishing company."

Pushcart Press recently published the novel.

To win the Pushcart Editors’ Award, manuscripts are nominated by editors
from around the country, and each manuscript must have been rejected by
at least 10 publishers.

Driscoll is also the author of four volumes of poetry and is the recipient
of several other awards including a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship
in fiction.

Driscoll’s new novel, "Stardog," has been accepted for publication
by DK Publishing.
