Volleyball team wins silver medal at Special Olympics World Games

The results are in and local Special Olympics athletes have come away from the 1999 World Games with Grant Hill autographs, a lot of memories and, of course, medals.
The Mount Pleasant Area Seven Volleyball Team won a silver medal. The first match was played against Southern California and the team won two out of three games with scores of 9-15, 15-12, and 15-9. In the final games, they played against Georgia and lost 8-15 and 9-15.
Team members include Jason Bowman, Gary Chamberlain, David Peterson, Don Quick, Jason Rollinger, Shannon Seawood, Jonathan Sura and Kevin Trecy.
“I felt our athletes put forth a really great effort with tough competition and made some wonderful memories within competition and meeting athletes from other countries,” said Marcy Lindberg, public relations director for Special Olympics Michigan.
The team also had a two-hour autograph and photo session with Grant Hill of the Detroit Pistons June 28. They were featured with Hill in ABC’s coverage of the World Games. The entire Michigan delegation also marched into Opening Ceremonies with Hill. Hill is vice chairman of the World Games.
The World Games were held June 26 through July 4 in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC. The 54 Michigan athletes joined 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from other US states and 150 other countries. The World Games was the largest international sporting event in the world in 1999.
Michigan athletes competed in 10 different sports, including aquatics, athletics (track and field), bocce, bowling, golf, gymnastics, football (soccer), volleyball and team handball.
On Friday and Saturday, there is a Summer Sports Classic in the Canton-Ypsilanti area. Mount Pleasant is sending two softball teams, one from Alma and some golfers, Lindberg said.
