Everybody dance now! Orchesis boogies at Bush

Orchesis, Central Michigan University’s
Dance Theatre, held the opening performance of its fall concert in Bush
Theatre last night. The group, led by artistic director Yvette Birs
Crandall, features 36 dancers, 10 males and 26 females. The show was
divided into three acts which each featured several unique performances.
The show opened with “Crystal Corridors”, a routine
with male and female dancers, performing lyrical dance to the music
of “Aurora Borealis.” This number features the most elaborate set, with
large pieces of what looks like glittery Saran Wrap dangling from the
ceiling, and a screen with flashing color designs on it at the rear
of the stage. There are six parts to the piece including an impressive
solo by dancer, Christine Lundin.
The next two pieces featured more contemporary music,
“Remembrance” with Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” and “The
Insomniacs Ball” with music by bands such as The Brian Setzer Orchestra.
“The Insomniac’s Ball,” which proved to be one of the crowd favorites,
is reminiscent of a ’60s “sock hop” (those with nostalgic parents know
what I’m talking about). The performers dress in pajamas and entertain
the crowd with pillow fights and by running through the aisles.
The second act consists of three pieces that vary
a great deal from one another. The “Cage” is more of a dramatic piece
than the others, featuring a large steal cage with five male dancers
trapped inside, trying to climb out. “Fury” is set to the tune of Michael
Jackson’s “They Don’t Really Care About Us.” It is a blend of “street
dance” and ballet, with the cast dressed in camouflage army pants. The
piece, choreographed by Keisha Hinton – who also performs in it – was
received with thunderous applause and calls of approval by the audience.
“Westward” has the cast dressed in western clothes, dancing and pantomiming
to the musical score of the movie “Country.”
The night ended with “Sacred Ceremonies,” a blend
of three short pieces, in which the ensemble have roles with titles
such as “The Shaman” and “The Chosen One.” The piece wrapped up a what
was a well-done performance by very talented dancers.
Natalie Stubenvoll, Rochester Hills freshman, said
of the show, “I think they’re doing a really great job. The acts are
well put together.” Many people also commented on the improved costumes
and sets that the concert features this year.
“Orchesis” will be performed at 8 p.m. tonight and
tomorrow night in Bush Theatre. Tickets are $5.00 to the general public
and $3.00 for students and senior citizens. They can be purchased ahead
of time at the Central Box office (774-3000) or at University Theater
Box office (774-3874). Tickets are also available at the door.
