Harry Potter steps children’s literature up a notch
Harry Potter is only eleven years old and he already knows how to fly and has defeated one of the worlds most powerful evil sorcerers in a battle of wits. Needless to say, in the underground world of witches and wizards, Potter is famous.
Harry Pottter, sadly, is not real, merely a character in J.K. Rowlings best-selling children’s series. Kids all over the world are reading again, thanks to Harry Potter and his magical ways.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is the first book in the 3 part Harry Potter series, and is simply magnificent. While aimed towards children ages 8-11, the book has something for all ages; it is an action packed tale of magic and deceit.
Harry’s parents died when he was a little baby, forcing his Aunt and Uncle Dursley to care for him. The Dursley’s are very cruel to Harry, and only provide the necessities for him while forcing him to live under the stairs for the first ten years of his life.
Out of the blue, Harry begins to receive letters addressed to him, which the Dursley’s will not let him read. Eventually Harry finds out that the letters contain his acceptance to Hogwart’s School of Wizardry and Witchcraft.
On the same day, Harry also learns about his parents, who both attended Hogwart’s, and of their untimely demise thanks to an evil sorcerer. Within a day Harry also learns of the secret underground world where witches and wizards call home.
Hogwart’s is your average everyday school of magic, it holds classes on the arts of magic, houses the students and has a quidditch team (a sport similar to soccer, but played on flying brooms). Harry catches on quickly, too, and begins to unravel a mystery happening at Hogwart’s.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” plays off every child’s fantasy of the ability to use magic and makes children’s books of the past look exactly like that, children’s books. Rowling makes the tale believable covering every detail to various types of wands to the perfect model broom to play Quidditch with, all the while packing every paragraph with action, leaving the reader wanting more at the end of the book.
There is more of course, considering that the “Sorcerer’s Stone” only covers Harry’s first of his four years at Hogwart’s. So the adventure has only begun, leaving many questions to be answered.
The biggest question of course, where was Harry Potter when I was 9-11 years old?
