Nonstop holiday music

Two of the best days of the year are Christmas Eve and Christmas day, and not because of the presents, family or Santa. It’s because of the 48 hours of non-stop Christmas music that is played on the radio.
I love waking up on Christmas Eve, flipping on the radio and not having to worry about any commercials, talk or crappy songs because there is no such thing as a bad Christmas song.
The radio stations definitely have the right idea, but I think they could take it a step further. I believe that all radio stations for two days out of the year should form an alliance – a united front, if you will – and assign various songs to various stations.
Just think of it, one station dedicated to “Sleigh Ride” and only “Sleigh Ride”. Thousands of versions of your favorite Christmas songs played for hours on end and you know there are thousands of versions of every song out there.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “That could get a little annoying.” But your wrong and I have proof. Back in 1991, a radio station in Detroit known as 96.3 FM played one song for 24 hours straight and I never got sick of it once or even changed the channel. The song you ask? “Ice, Ice, Baby” by Vanilla Ice, which incidentally has been proven as a Christmas song thanks to a certain Gap advertisement.
Imagine being in the mood for “Feliz Navidad” and being able to flip to the “Feliz Navidad,” station. Although I think there is only one version of that song, I wouldn’t mind listening to that song for an hour or two.
FM and AM working together, what an event? You could have all the classics on AM, like “The Bells of Christmas”, “O’ Holy Night”, “Ave Maria”, “Silent Night”, “Away in the Manger”, “We Three Kings” and “Joy to the World”. Your grandparents would eat that up.
FM would feature the more recent tunes like ” The Christmas Song”, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, “Do They Know It’s Christmas time at All?”, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” (including all offshoots like “New Kids Got….”), “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “The Barking Dog Christmas Song”. I would take back all my presents if that were to happen.
I also believe that there is room for more recent Christmas hits which could be dedicated to one station. Now I know that many don’t consider the “Hanson Snowed In” album a Christmas classic but unfortunately somewhere someone does. So make room on the FM dial for the new style like “Christmas in Hollis”, “A Spice Girls Christmas”, “A Jewel Christmas” and a ton of others.
There are some downfalls, however, to this plan, and would require a little work on the listeners part, but if we can send a probe to mars we should be able to figure a way for the radio stations to switch the station. Hmmm that could be a problem, but all great ideas have some obstacles to overcome.
The world would be much happier place if such an alliance were to be formed, without a doubt the “John Denver and the Muppets Christmas” would get the most listeners while poor Kenny G would be cancelled.
