‘Rad’ defeats Moore
“Final Destination”
**** out of five
Imagine: Playing the board game “Mouse Trap,” except at the end
you die.
Rated R for death. Everywhere. And we mean everywhere.
You can’t cheat death. Ever.
The bar for suspense flicks has been raised yet again thanks to the crazed antics found within “Final Destination.” The films antagonist death is one “mack daddy you don’t want to fuck with,” according to the funeral home director (also known as the “Candyman” in some circles) in the film.
Like all suspense films, there is a design to them and “Final Destination” takes the design and skews it so far from the original design making films like “The Sixth Sense,” seem like a Disney movie. “I see dead people,” is nothing more than a cheese ball line. “I see death,” is the latest and unfortunately when one cheats death problems occur.
The final destination for all in the movie is death and there is now way around it. Death always wins, even if it comes down to a long set of chain reactions that ultimately result in a characters demise, execution style.
The film begins as a group of 40 students make their way to Paris on a class trip. But Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has an intense vision of the plane exploding minutes after take-off. A vision is so intense that myself and ‘N Sync plan to stay on the ground for a while.
Alex, four other classmates and a teacher all are forced off the plane thanks to Alex’s uproar in the cabin of the plane. Minutes after exiting the plane it does it fact explode, shattering the windows of the terminal and at the same time scaring the bejesus out the entire audience. Keep in mind this is five minutes into the film and it goes nowhere but up from here.
Alex eventually comes to terms with the fact that he has figured out the design for death and is determined to beat it. He also realizes that death is pissed that he and his compatriots got off the plane and is out to finish the design that was originally intended for the five.
“Final Destination,” is a suspenseful thriller that will cause your jaw to drop and leave you with the shivers as death has its way with Alex’s pals. Each death sequence is an intricate set of chain reactions designed to kill the said victim with precision.
Director/ writer James Wong’s debut feature film is a gem that utilizes action sequences and an invisible enemy instead of relying on plot twists, like the “Sixth Sense’s” whole Bruce Willis is dead thing.
There is nothing out there like “Final Destination, go see it now otherwise, “I’ll see you soon.”
