*NSync says ‘Bye Bye Bye’ to second best in latest release

*NSYNC- “No Strings Attached”
Jive Records

Best Lyric: “Here it comes, millennium. And everybody’s
talkin’ ’bout Jerusalem.”

You may not want to admit it but *NSync’s first single, “Bye Bye Bye” has got you jumping around and waving “Bye Bye Bye,” to playa hating the boys from *NSync.
“No Strings Attached,” which was released yesterday (and probably will destroy Backstreet’s record sales thanks to the incredible buzz behind all things *NSync) continues with the high energy “dirty pop,” a phrase coined by *NSyncer Justin Timberlake (the one with the afro). It appears as if *NSync is planning on taking over the world of pop and “No Strings,” has the potential to do just that.
Justin, JC, Chris (sans dreadlocks), Lance and Joey seem to be executing their plan to perfection, with several thousand appearances on MTV. Yesterday on TRL over 8,000 fans turned out to catch a glimpse of the new heavyweight champions of boy bands.
Their latest musical conquest is pure emotion coupled with high energy. They complete the album with a few ballads for the ladies. Making the smart move, “No Strings” starts out with the now “dirty pop” standard “Bye Bye Bye” and keeps things moving with “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “Space Cowboy (Yippie-Yi-Yay) featuring Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes.” *NSync’s confidence and not-so-wholesome attitude is what sells the record, from their reassurance that it will be with her to their crazed Yippie-Yi-Yay chorus in “Space Cowboy.”
The ballads however are a little thin and nothing to write home about, but are sure to leave the pre-teens screaming their heads off. “This I Promise You,” the first ballad to appear on the disc, has all the cred necessary for a strong showing – it’s written by Richard Marx.
Track 4 even attempts to bring back the “New Jack Swing,” in the club classic, “Just Got Paid,” remixed *NSync style of course.
Other highlights include “Digital Get Down,” a song about the digital revolution complete with Cher like vocal processing and the ever popular modem screeching during the breakdown.
The *NSyncers choose to end the album on a soft note, does that translate into, they are nothing but softies on the inside? The last three tracks stray from the dirty pop sound and lead more towards sweet melodic. The capper being the a cappella (as seen on MTV’s *NSync weekend special) “I Thought She Knew.” Which turns out to be one of the first song the boys ever learned, doesn’t that just warm your heart?
Overall, “No Strings Attached,” exhibits a well-rounded pop album that if everyone would just given a chance they would like. BSB watch your backs cause *NSync is here to stay and this time the strings aren’t attached.
All they have to worry about now is a certain boy band called ETC.
*** out of five
