An investigation into claims of Agent Orange buried on campus is in progress.
A Facilities Management worker told CM LIFE on March 28 that he helped bury Agent Orange chemicals in three locations on and near CMU’s campus in the early 1970s.
Jean Lindley, senior officer for Facilities Management and Police, said she met with the worker and is still working on finding out if his claims are true.
Lindley said she has met with the source and Robert Kohrman, dean of the College of Science and Technology, but needs to talk with one more person before she can discuss the situation.
She would not disclose the identity of the third person.
“I’d like to wait until I get all the facts together to determine what the situation is,” Lindley said.
She said to her knowledge no records of Agent Orange burials exist.
The worker who said he helped bury Agent Orange also said he can not talk about the investigation until it is complete. He would not say whether he plans to call the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality about the possibility of the Agent Orange.
The MDEQ has said, if a complaint is filed, it would test the burial sites where the Agent Orange was allegedly buried to find out if the soils are contaminated and if they are harmful.
