Monica Rao begins work as CMU ambassador next month

 

Monica Rao has been appointed as CMU ambassador and will
begin working for the university Aug. 1.
As ambassador, the wife of new University President Michael Rao will hold
an active role in building relationships with members of the campus and
local community, donors, legislators, alumni and other publics served
by CMU, according to her contract with the university signed May 30.
Rao’s initial annual salary as ambassador is $25,000, which is subject
to review each year by the Board of Trustees or one of its committees.
As part of the professional and administrative employees group, Rao will
receive the fringe benefits package, which is a flexible benefit program.
Included in this package are such benefits as life insurance, health,
prescription drug, dental and vision insurance, and long-term and short-term
disability insurance.
However, the following sections of the P&A Handbook will not apply to
her, given the unique nature of her employment:

  • Demotion
  • Discipline and discharge
  • Expense reimbursement
  • Job descriptions
  • Performance evaluation
  • Probationary period
  • Promotion
  • Recognition
  • Reduction in force
  • Research program
  • Research opportunities
  • Teaching assignments
  • Transfer
  • Trial period
  • Work schedules
  • Leave time
  • Determination of salary/wage
  • General salary increase
  • Salary adjustments
  • Lump sum payments
  • Overtime/compensatory time
  • Dispute resolution process

The contract between Rao and the board will terminate if
any of the following conditions arise:

  • If Rao accepts other employment or consultancies equivalent to half
    time or more employment;
  • Upon the termination of Michael Rao’s service as president;
  • If she becomes completely disabled or incapacitated or incapable
    of carrying out her duties;
  • In addition, the board may terminate her employment at any time for
    just cause.
