Sosa Letter
To the Editor,
Hello there, my name is Juan Sosa and I’m an MBA student living in Washington
Apartments.
Since I first came to CMU two years ago, I’ve always parked in CMU parking
Lot 8 when attending either my day classes or my work (I work as a graduate assistant
for the College of Business). When leaving my office today, I walked to my car
to drive myself home and surprisingly noticed I had gotten a ticket for $25 for
“Parking in a Restricted Area.”
I immediately told myself, this has to be a mistake. So I decided to go to the
CMU Police Department and to be even more amazed of this situation I was told
I was no longer allowed to park in Lot 8 because I’m just allowed to do so
at Washington Apartments.
I was and am still shocked because before going to the CMU Police station I drove
around the parking lot and entered both entries to the lot (the one by Bellows
St. and the other one by West Campus Drive) trying to find any signal where I
could easily read the new restrictions for parking there. There was NOT and still
there is NOT such a signal. The current signs clearly states: CMU Lot 8 –
Current permits,” as they used to state two years ago.
Now I wonder, if I’m not allowed to park anywhere else but Washington Apartments,
is there any warranty that I’ll always find a spot when special events take
place on campus? I’d like to see this happen.
Since I’ve been here when such events occur it is almost impossible for Washington
Apartments residents to find a place to park because all the complex is crowded
by hundreds of cars, some of which park over the grass and ironically they don’t
get tickets. Is that fair? I’m sure it is not.
I will appreciate it if you make any reference to this situation in your next
edition.
