CMU Police develop lucrative contest in hopes of alleviating parking woes
Free tuition for being a commuter.
Sounds like quite the offer.
CMU Police has offered a contest to students who commute and park in designated
lots.
The rationale behind this? To relieve the extreme amount of commuters who park
in Lot 22, and help alleviate the flow of traffic on campus.
Each week, six students who park in three south-end lots will receive a $20 gift
certificate to the CMU Bookstore. At the end of each semester, all of the students
who were in these drawings are put into a grand-prize drawing to pay for tuition
for the following semester.
We applaud CMU Police for taking on this responsibility and trying to solve the
reoccurring issue of problems with parking. Taking the initiative to help with
the problem while offering a hefty prize is a giant step in the right direction.
Lots 62, 63 and 64, which are located near Kelly/Shorts Stadium, are the selected
lots where cars are chosen from. While the lots may prove more than “a few
minutes walk” from classes, the dream of free tuition for a semester is more
than enough initiative for people to get out and walk a little more.
In the future, planning a contest such as this would more than likely suit the
college population in the spring or fall. The Michigan weather in the winter is
harsh, as we all know. This may be the only deterrent of the contest idea.
While we applaud the efforts to improve parking, at the same time we would hope
the timing for future contests be taken into consideration to avoid weather-induced
lack of participation.
