Dave Matthews, Lit and Toad the Wet Sprocket should start checking their rearview
mirrors more often, because Tripper is coming up behind them fast along the
greaseline.
Tripper got themselves a two for one deal by handing me a free copy of their
latest album, “Moxie Stick,” after their October 6 show at Rubbles.
However, should I have purchased a copy of this album, it would be worth every
dollar spent on it.
Their music reflects the stylings of the bands mentioned above, but seems to
have a greater power behind it than any one of those. They make their album
easy to listen to, and is filled with energetic drum beats, easy to listen to
guitar and good quality singing.
The album starts off on a highly energetic note with the song “Hammock,”
which possesses that energy that makes Tripper’s music fun and easy to
listen to without being boring or overly repetitive. Other songs on this disc
follow that pattern, such as “Butterfly,” “Floored,” and
“Overwhelmed,” which is also my favorite track on this album.
The album also features a lighter side, which just about any band has, but this
one pulls off somewhat better than others I have heard. Some are just not cut
out for the soft side, but Tripper pulls it off with a nice touch. Songs such
as “Ashley,” “All the Waydown,” and “Let You Go”
give the album a perfect break from the energetic songs.
The overall combination of acoustic and electric instruments gives Tripper their
unique alternative punk sound. The singer uses clear vocals and an interestingly
different singing voice to carry the messages his songs lay out for all the
listeners to hear. The drums and percussion heightens the total sensation of
the album.
There are only one or two disappointing tracks on this album, but those can
be overlooked for the better ones on this album. However, I can hardly think
of any CD that is currently on the market that everyone who owns it likes every
track that is on the album.
Overall, Tripper’s “Moxie Stick” is an excellent addition to
the local music scene. Their energy, and light-hearted, easy to listen to music
makes the perfect addition to just about any collection. This CD might also
be perfect for those long road trips, as it seems to make time pass by quickly
with its fun rhythms and lyrics. I would highly encourage anyone who is a fan
of Lit, Dave Matthews, Everclear, or Toad the Wet Sprocket to pick up a copy
of this CD.
