Students sustain minor injuries in two accidents

Several students sustained minor injuries following a motorcycle-car accident
on East Campus Drive and a bike-car accident on Broomfield Road Thursday evening.
Julie Shmayda, Novi freshman, said she was driving north on East Campus Drive
in her 1990 Pontiac Sunbird LE and, after missing the left turn into Lot 62, decided
to make a U-turn.
“I don’t know what I was thinking,” she said.
Shmayda said she was halfway through the turn when a Honda motorcycle, driven
by Ortonville junior Andrew Zull, attempted to pass on the left. The two collided,
causing major damage to the front and side of the bike, and the driver’s-side
front quarter panel of the car.
Shmayda said she did not sustain any serious injuries and declined treatment by
the Mobile Medical Response unit dispatched to the scene.
Zull received minor injuries, including several scratches on his legs, but denied
treatment.
Zull’s passenger, Almont senior Christie Kinkade, also received leg wounds,
including a deep puncture wound in her left knee. She opted to receive medical
treatment and was driven to Central Michigan Community Hospital, 1221 South Drive,
by friends.
CMU Police Officer McCarther Griffis said he could not comment on the incident
until his report is completed, within 24 hours of the incident. As of press time,
no citations were issued to either party.
“It’s still under investigation,” Griffis said.
A second accident involving a Pontiac Sunfire and a bicycle occurred at about
6:30 p.m.
A 20-year-old CMU female student driving the Pontiac entered the Student Activity
Center parking lot. She noticed a man riding a bike and stopped; however, the
biker struck the front quarter panel of the car, said CMU Police Officer William
Martinez.
The 40-year-old Kentwood man was transported to CMCH via ambulance for minor injuries
and the incident is still under investigation, Martinez said.
