Sex, relationships discussed by panel
On October 16th, Family Life and Human Sexuality Association and HEV 213 put on Lovelines, a program to discuss and answer students questions about sex and family.
The experts, Dr. Jerry Strouse and Dr. Tara Saathoff-Wells, Human Environmental Studies professors, were giving their advice and insight.
“I enjoy doing things like this. I have been teaching human sexuality for 20 years and was a certified sex educator through American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists,” said Strouse.
Strouse said that he did a similar question and answer session four weeks ago at Saxe-Herrig.
“The difference between the two is that at the Saxe-Herrig discussion they talked about difficulty in communication and here it was questions of physiology,” said Strouse.
At the beginning of the program, cards were passed out to the audience to write their questions down confidentially.
Topics such as AIDS tests, the morning after pill, the percentage of condom breakage, how alcohol effects sexual performance and Preacher Rick were brought up.
The question concerning Preacher Rick asked if his preaching was correct and if students should believe what he preaches.
John Thorpe, Berkley graduate student, took it upon himself to answer.
“I’m really glad that the man isn’t right, and I’m sorry if anyone tends to agree with him, but if he were right, I’d have a box seat in hell just waiting for me,” Thorpe said.
F.L.H.S.A. treasurer Gerri Atwell, Oxford sophomore, asked the questions to Saathoff-Wells and Strouse.
“My favorite question was the one about getting sperm to taste better by eating oranges. If that works I am going to market it,” said Atwell.
Students thought that it was informative and still entertaining.
“I learned quite a bit. I should have taken notes,” said Jen Fenby, Eagle junior.
Alanna Curry, Brighton junior, agreed with Fenby.
“It was good and informative, but I felt like I was in class still,” said Curry.
“It was very entertaining,” said Julie Muller, Mount Pleasant junior.
Curry said that the best part was to see her professor being so graphic.
F.L.H.S.A. was pleased with the results of the discussion.
“We wanted for the discussion to be fun, entertaining, and informative and it looks like we did that,” said F.L.H.S.A. secretary Christina Jelken, Fowlerville Senior.
Jelken said that another reason that the program was put on was to get people aware of the group.
“Since this was so successful, we are going to try to get something going for next month, but we’re not sure what yet,” said Jelken.
Jelken said that everyone is welcome to the F.L.H.S.A. meetings and that they have applications to join the group.
The next meeting is tonight at 9 p.m. in Anspach 257A.
