We applaud the university’s stance on student records, the move away from home must be more than just a physical action.
While no formal financial independence may ever be claimed, the first week away from home is a wake-up call of independence to both student and parent.
By leaving the immediate surroundings of their parents or guardians, students are taking responsibility for their actions and the university should concur with such action.
Parents too contribute to this sense of independence as they kiss their children good-bye and say hello to adults a few short years later.
While the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is a federal mandate to protect the rights of families but doesn’t fully protect students. It allows for universities to set their own code of student’s rights, responsibilities and disciplinary procedures.
CMU has chosen to follow this act with strict deference to the student’s interest.
The job of an institution of higher learning is to fully prepare its students for the professional world, not just intellectually.
Putting more responsibility on the shoulders of students is a step in the right direction and one we urge more universities to follow.
