Today isn’t just a day of love, it is a day to become aware of violence against women
Today is Valentine’s Day, a time for each of us to celebrate the love we show each other throughout the year.
But in between the chocolates and flowers, we ought to all stop and think about what else is celebrated today.
Victory Over Violence Day is a day designed to heighten awareness of violence against women, another cause which needs more than just one day of increased awareness per year.
Since its inception three years ago, the V-Day movement has been able to generate more than $1 million and garnered attention across the nation from the rich and famous.
But at the heart of V-Day are the grassroots organizations which work to stop the problem of violence against women everyday, they’re the ones we celebrate today.
So as you spend a cozy romantic dinner with your significant other today, think about the women across the country who thought they had found someone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, but were mistaken.
Then think about the groups, including those here at CMU, that are working to stop this epidemic.
Then ask yourself, do I want to stop violence against women, too?
