Prom dresses donated for clothing fund-raiser

Anyone interested in cleaning out their closet and putting old prom dresses to good use is encouraged to donate the dresses to PR Central.
PR Central is a student-run public relations firm and is part of the Public Relations Student Society of America.
President Abby Ault, Farmington Hills senior, got the idea of a prom dress sale after attending a convention, said Kate Vickers, Royal Oak senior and PR Central account executive.
PR Central is looking for people to donate any formal dresses or old prom dresses, shoes and accessories, Vickers said.
They will have a boutique sale March 24 with the donations. PR Central is holding the sale to help promote its name, raise money, and most of all, to help girls in the community, she said.
“I think it’s an interesting idea. I think it would be helpful because the dress is normally the one reason why a lot of people can’t go to prom since it’s way too expensive. And everyone wants to be elegant at prom,” said Janessa Butz, Rochester freshman.
The cost of the dresses will probably not exceed $20, and shoes and accessories will be under $10, Vickers said.
“This is the first time we’ve done this; it’s like a trial run. I don’t know what the outcome will be, but right now we’re pretty optimistic and excited about it,” she said.
Anyone interested in donating dresses or accessories can contact PR Central by e-mailing them at pr_central@hotmail.com, or by calling Vickers at 779-8780.
“We are willing to pick anything up,” she said.
She would like donations as soon as possible, but will continue to accept anything until March 24. Everyone who donates an item will receive a ticket for each donation. The tickets are then entered in a random drawing to win a pizza party for the winner and five friends.
Another public relations firm had done the fund-raiser which was a success. PR Central does all services free of charge, including event planning and press releases for events.
The money earned from the dress sale will go towards a general fund for PR Central.
“Because all our services are free of charge, the money will probably help pay for the various costs we encounter,” Vickers said.
