United Way to host annual meeting

The annual United Way meeting will highlight donors to the program and elect
new board members.
The United Way of Isabella County will host the meeting at 7 p.m. March 22 in
the Mount Pleasant High School Cafeteria.
Members will elect directors and officers of the board of directors, said Linda
Cooper, United Way executive director.
The board is involved in making decisions that govern United Way, she said.
In addition, United Way will recognize members of the current board of directors
who will be completing their terms, recognize and award volunteers, and present
the annual Quality of Life Award.
“This award is presented to someone who contributed significantly to
the United Way through volunteering and philanthropy and has helped improve
the quality of life for citizens of Isabella County,” Cooper said.
The meeting will also reveal the annual report, including audit figures for
the United Way and Volunteer Center.
It is open to members only. To be a member, one must have donated money to the
current 2000-2001 campaign.
The agencies that have given money are invited, and the board of directors will
also be in attendance. Last year, nearly 75 people attended, and Cooper said
she expects around the same turnout this year.
“There are a core group of people who make their commitment to the United
Way perpetual; they are continual givers. There are also sporadic givers, and
we had some first-time givers this year,” she said.
A large portion of United Way’s fund collection comes from payroll deduction,
she said. Other contributions come in the form of cash and check donations.
“Time is also a valuable treasure,” Cooper said.
United Way derives part of its campaign funds from CMU. Most of the support
is from monetary contributions, but some comes from volunteer efforts, she said.
United Way supports health and human service programs, and hosts an annual fund
raiser for that purpose, Cooper said.
The program aims to “enhance the organized capacity for people to care
for one another in need,” according to the United Way mission statement.
