Comedian had CMU laughing Friday

Plachta Auditorium in Warriner Hall rang with the sounds of laughter, cheering,
and applause for the comedy of Elvira Kurt on Friday night.
Presented by On the Fly, Kurt’s two and a half hour show went directly
past the expectations of the crowd into the field of true excellence on the
stage.
Kurt opened her show amidst a wild ovation marking her appearance on stage.
She kicked off her show by poking fun at the town and the naming of the university
in relation to is location on the map. She noted that all the cheering couldn’t
be for her, but for the fact that there was something to do on a Friday night.
She then compared the use of the hand as a map of the state to using your foot
to note one’s location in Italy.
Kurt went on to poke fun at her home state of California for complaining about
“cold” weather. She stated that people from that side of the country
really have no concept of what cold is, since the Canadian geese were making
a U-turn at the Canadian border.
Kurt continued her show with the first hint at her sexual orientation with a
segment on naming the female teams at Central the “Lady Chippewas.”
She stated that it was similar to naming a team of females under the cougar
mascot “The Three-Legged Cats.”
Kurt took the audience back to the days of her youth, when love was tough and
you picked on people by telling them the truth about themselves. This bit spilled
into wondering why we gave up throwing tantrums and other such behavior when
we became adults. She provided the example of not being able to throw yourself
on the ground and cry when a store didn’t have what you were looking for.
Kurt’s show went on to other topics, such as the sudden revelation of her
sexual orientation and its relation to her childhood memories. She linked it
to her mother forcing her to wear a handmade two-piece hot pink pantsuit.
Kurt then went to poking fun at all of the time-saving devices in the world,
such as salad in a bag, cell phones, pagers, and palm pilots. She also hit on
the subject of driving in this segment, by pointing out how annoyed most people
are at getting a red light after the person in front of you just sped through
the yellow. She likened it to a race, with everyone wanting to be the first
to wait again at the next red light.
Her show also covered such topics as changing a perfectly good invention such
as the toothbrush, questioning why Tampax has a website and the pickle jar has
a phone number on the side of it, and playgrounds of days gone by.
Overall, Elvira Kurt performed an excellent show. The evidence for this fact
existed at the very end of the show when Kurt received a standing ovation for
her successful comedic efforts. Kurt may defy gender roles and transcend traditional
ideas of human sexuality, but her raw talent and brilliance in comedy brings
everything about her into perspective.
