April 17 concert to feature Gillingham

Three Central Michigan bands will perform in evening of music with the featured
piece written by music Professor David Gillingham.
The piece “Heroes, Lost and Fallen” played by the Wind Symphony was
written by Gillingham, said Music secretary Idda Sales.
The bands will perform at 7 p.m. April 17 in the Music Building Recital Hall.
The three bands featured in this concert are the University Band, under the
direction of Brian Sleeper, Mount Pleasant graduate student; the Symphony Band,
under the direction of Bands Assistant Director James Bachelor; and the Wind
Symphony, under the direction of School of Music Professor John Williamson.
“There are two concerts put on a semester, and this is the last one of
the year,” said Williamson, bands director.
Each conductor picked out pieces students would be able to study and learn.
Wind Symphony band will also perform “Celebrations” by American composer
John Zdecklik.
The Symphony Band will perform “Canzona” by 20th century American
composer Peter Mennin and “Five Miniatures” by Spanish composer Joaquin
Turina.
The Symphony Band will also perform Gillingham’s “And Can It Be?”
and “Fanfares from Libuse” by 19th century Czechoslovakian composer
Bedrich Smetana.
The University Band will perform “Suite Provencale” by Dutch composer
Jan Van der Roost, “Harvest Hymn” by American composer Percy Aldridge
Grainger, and “Masque” by American composer W. Francis McBeth.
The pieces were picked by each conductor, Williamson said, and the concert is
designed to show the progress students have made during the semester.
“There are a lot of good players. It should be an exciting evening.”
