Top Ten things you should do …

Finals week is only a few days away, and for many these days are the final reckoning
for everything learned since the beginning of the semester. Well, at least everything
learned since the last test.
Some are arduously preparing for judgment day, while others seek to procrastinate
their studying until the day before the final. Those who choose to put things
off until the last minute may need some help finding things to do instead of picking
up their books. As a result, I have assembled a list of the top ten things one
could be doing instead of studying for exams.
10. Visit the Purple Cow: What’s that, you’ve never seen a purple
cow? Well, you’d probably rather see than be one. There is a Purple Cow conveniently
located in the Meijer, and one not so conveniently located on M-20 about 20 minutes
out of Mt. Pleasant. The choice is yours depending on boredom level. However,
since it is a restaurant of sorts, there is really nothing more to do there than
eat and leave.
9. See a movie: This also requires money, a commodity which most of us
don’t have at this point in the year. This is a good choice because the average
length of a movie is an hour and a half. The two main locations to see a flick
is at the Cinema Four, located conveniently in Mt. Pleasant, and Celebration Cinema,
located on Pickard St. The choice is yours based on the money you have and level
of boredom. However, since there really aren’t too many good films out right
now, the movies might not be the best choice.
8. Go for a drive: A good selection for those with deep pockets and an
insensitivity to how the oil cartels are screwing us over. There are a number
of back roads around this area, plus a whole downtown of one way streets that
are sure to keep today’s driver going around in circles. However, getting
lost is never fun because it’s really hard to get yourself back on track.
7. Go to the Student Activity Center: Within the walls of the SAC is a
wide array of things to do. Pool tables, ping pong, racquetball, and a hot tub
are just a few of the many things available to every student on campus. Plus,
a session at the SAC could last for several hours at a time.
6. Go to the bar: Another good choice for those with some extra cash to
spend. Although this is primarily a late-night pastime, there are a plethora of
drinking establishments around town to choose from. Also, one can’t forget
the bars that are also grills and therefore open earlier. Featuring pool tables,
darts, and people to mingle with, a night at the bar can go until two in the morning
easily. The only drawback is the moths flying out of your wallet the next day.
5. Play frisbee: Always a good source of entertainment, it requires that
you find another procrastinator to return the disc to you. It also requires a
nice day to play on, which are in short supply right now for some reason or another.
However, a good game of frisbee can go on for hours on end.
4. Visit a park: Always a good pastime for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
The only requirement for park visiting is a nice day and a good sense of direction.
One can literally spend hours wandering around a park, or just sitting and enjoying
the outdoors. Plus, the fact that it’s free helps out a great deal, and there
are many parks from which to choose.
3. Visit a friend: Hanging out with someone you know is always good way
to spend time. Usually, they’re willing to talk with you, or go out to do
something with you. Plus, there’s nothing like helping out your best pal
with their efforts in procrastination. However, if they actually want to study
for exams, then they might not be so willing to give up their time.
2. Watch TV: Ah, America’s favorite pastime. Nothing like sitting
down in front of the tube to watch fights on The Jerry Springer Show or The Simpsons.
The only problem with television is the fact that there really isn’t nay
good daytime programming. This means that the only real entertainment can be derived
later in the day. However, if you can catch a block of good programming, several
hours can go by in a seemingly fast manner.
1. Throw a party: This is perhaps the most used method of study avoidance
method on campus to date. Not only do you get the pleasure of not studying, but
you can usually assemble about 30 other people and all of their friends who don’t
want to study in a big procrastinator’s rally. Nothing beats bringing a whole
group of people together under a united cause.
Hopefully, this list will be helpful in your avoidance of studying. Some of these
methods are in high use already, and some have yet to be tried. Whatever it is
you choose to do, make sure that is maximizes fun and time consumption.
