Minyard Letter

Response to a letter to the editor published Wednesday

I take exception to the letter by Adam Barrett published in Your Voice Sept. 5.
to set the record straight, there is a firing range in the basement of Finch Hall.
Army ROTC conducts rifle marksmanship classes using M16A2 rifles with .22-caliber
sub-caliber devices. These rifles are borrowed from local National Guard units.
The only ammunition used is .22 caliber and the rifles will fire only on semi-automatic
(one round at a time). Based on its location and design, under no circumstances
could “a stray bullet … go flying and kill someone any second.” The
range is small and students are closely supervised by Army Non-commissioned Officers
to ensure safety. The range is also used by the CMU Rifle Club, Recreation, Parks
and Leisure classes and the CMU Police Department.

All groups must follow stringent range regulations established to ensure safe
firing.
