Many computer-realted jobs available
Students undecided about their major may look to computer-related jobs for a sure bet and higher pay.
Career Services Director Julia Sherlock said seven out of the eight fastest-growing occupations requiring a bachelor’s degree are related to computers.
She said the winter 2001-2002 edition of the Bureau of Labor Statistics cites computer software engineer applications as the No. 1 fastest-growing occupation in the nation.
Other rapidly growing occupations requiring a bachelor’s degree include computer software engineers, network and computer systems administrators, network systems and data communications analysts, data base administrators, computer systems analysts and computer information and systems managers, she said.
“There are lots of opportunities nationwide. This data doesn’t mean that if I’m an (interpersonal and public communication) major, I’m not going to get a job,” Sherlock said.
The largest job growth is quite similar to the data for the fastest-growing jobs, she said.
Computer and data processing services rank number one, followed by residential care, health services, cable and pay television services and personnel supply services.
