Walgreens to open in January

Starting in January, students can see what the city gave up a Rally’s and a movie theater for … a Walgreens.

The store will have its grand opening in January, said Carol Hively, company spokeswoman. It will include 13,650 square feet of drugstore necessities. The store also will have a drive-thru pharmacy and one-hour photo processing, she said. It will employ 25 to 30 people.

Walgreens applied for a Brownfield classification, which the city approved. A Brownfield means that the area is in need of environmental clean-up, and allows Walgreens Corp. to receive state tax cuts for decontaminating the area. The contamination is a result of a gas station that used to sit at the same spot as Rally’s Hamburgers.
