BUC has strong campus reputation

The Bovee University Center is one of the prime on-campus attractions —
a role in which UC employees take pride.

“We are a very special location,” said UC Manager Jim Burke.

The UC, which opened in 1960, has undergone several changes in the best interest
of students, he said.

“Due to all the student service facilities, we are a one-stop shop. Before
(certain) renovations, students had to go all over campus for academic needs
and social needs,” Burke said.

He said more than 19,000 people a day venture into the building, which houses
various offices, including: the Service Center, Career Services, Central Box
Office, Student ID Office, CMU Bookstore, Dean of Students Office, Governmental
Relations, International Education, Minority Student Services, Multicultural
Education Center, Native American Programs, Office of Residence Life, Office
of Student Life, Ombuds Office, Orientation Office, Program Board, Residence
Hall Assembly, Residences and Auxiliary Services, Student Government Association,
Student Organization Center, UC Copy Center, Undergraduate Nontraditional Services,
Student Employment Services, Academic Senate and the Volunteer and Service
Learning Center.

With such heavy traffic in the UC, Burke said keeping the building presentable
is crucial.

“All year long, we have (prospective) students coming in, and it’s
important we keep a good image,” he said.

Many students enjoy hanging out in the UC, Burke said.

“The lobby is popular with the big-screen television. The Down Under
Food Court and the Student Organization Center are also hot spots,” he
said. “We would like to build a student union in the future with couches
and big screens, but at the moment, we don’t have space.”

Burke said there are many possibilities for the building if more space was
available.

“On down the road, we are looking to add on,” he said.

Because the UC is a specific location, students bring their families to show
them the building, Burke said.

“It shows we are doing something right,” he said.
