CLAS Testing Center open for tests, exams

CMU’s Center for Learning Assessment Services Testing Center is available
to students as a way to save test-taking time.

The function of CLAS is to administer tests so classroom time is not wasted
and students can learn more, said Duane Goupell, CLAS manager. In addition,
students can choose times best for their schedule to take their exams at the
center.

“We’re here to provide a service to them (students) and to make
their life easier,” Goupell said.

The testing center is available to serve both students and instructors as
a function of the university, he said.

Testing center employees described the positive aspects of the center as being
flexible and more secure than the classroom, as center employees patrol the
testing room to prevent cheating.

Students can take as long as they choose to complete their exams.

“In the classroom, you’re controlled by a clock,” Goupell said.
“Here you don’t have to worry about that.”

Montrose senior Amanda Stevens said one thing she does not like about the
CLAS Testing Center is if a student had a question about the test or material,
no professor or instructor is available to clarify matters.

However, it does have its advantages, she said.

“It’s good because you can take (a test) any time of the day, and
you don’t feel stressed,” Stevens said.

The testing center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday,
and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
It is located on Algonquin Drive between Robinson and Calkins halls.

The testing center staff recommends students read the rules and policies before
attending.

Students also must bring their Student ID and a pencil.

Backpacks, book bags and hats are not allowed in the testing room, and can
be locked in lockers in the lobby.

When students enter the center to check in, they should head to the line that
corresponds with the course number of the test to be taken.
