Student Activity Center provides fun, fitness

The Student Activity Center is CMU’s home for physical activity.

The 175,000 square foot building, which opened in 1990, houses the offices
for Central’s athletic teams and intramural sports.

With amenities such as a bowling alley and a swimming pool, Recreational Services
Coordinator Jen Miracle said the SAC is a ideal place to begin when familiarizing
students with campus.

“It’s a great place for balancing academics and working out,”
Miracle said.

Attached to Rose Arena, the CMU community uses the SAC for a variety of activities
including, aquatics, aerobics, fitness training, jogging, billiards, indoor
soccer, archery, table tennis, badminton, tennis, floor hockey, dancing and
leisure activities.

“A lot of students come here to relieve stress,” Miracle said.

The SAC features racquetball, basketball and volleyball courts, a weight lifting
center, an indoor track, a hot tub, saunas and the Fast Break concession stand.
In addition to providing outlets for physical activity, a big-screen television
lounge, pool tables and the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame also are in the building.

The SAC is open from 6 a.m. to midnight Monday-Thursday and from 6 a.m. to
11 p.m. on Fridays. On Saturdays, the SAC is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and
from 10 a.m. to midnight Sundays.

As one of the university’s premier structures, all full-time students
are automatically billed a $50 SAC fee at the start of each semester, Miracle
said.
