Student Media is overseen by the Student Media Board of Directors. The Board is composed of students and professional journalists, and its purpose is to appoint editors, formulate policies and provide direction for Student Media.

Jim Wojcik, former director of Student Media, said CM Life will become independent when it becomes non-profit and complies with the state and national government’s laws for non-profit organizations.

"There are a lot of hurdles that need to be walked through to set this up. The publication responsible to the Board has no outside influence from the department or the president," he said.

"The board members … are outstanding quality people and journalists. Three are graduates from our program who have worked in the publication process, and the others are familiar with our program," he said.

The Board meets once per semester, usually in late November and early April. During the spring meeting, the Board selects the summer and fall editors of CM Life, the editor of The Central Review (Central’s poetry and fiction publication) and the Chippewa Yearbook (which will cease publication after the 2001-02 year). During the fall meeting, the Board selects the editor of CM Life for the spring semester.

After editors are selected, they choose their respective staff usually within one week. Application deadlines and forms can be obtained in the CM Life office, 426 Moore Hall, (989) 774-3493.
