Greeks express sympathy
Greek officials are remaining mum on the details of a Sept. 7 aggravated assault that occurred on the 600 block of Main Street.
Though some said they need more details before they issue a statement,
Panhellenic Council President Kathleen Denton said she supports the family
of the victim, 18-year-old Jacob Showalter of Sanford.
“My support and the Greek community, we will do anything to support this
family,” she said. “We are very sorry. As a CMU student, I hope we can help
in any way. This is a very important topic. Whoever did this needs to be
brought to justice.”
Showalter was beaten unconscious and allegedly had his head stomped on
after leaving a Main Street party during the early morning of Sept. 7, witnesses
say.
Janet Showalter, Jacob Showalter’s mother, was told the assailants opened
her son’s mouth, put it on the curb and stomped the back of his head five
or six times.
Nathan Smith, director of undergraduate services for the Sigma Chi Corp.,
said the first he saw about the incident was on the Central Michigan Life
Web site.
“From what I understand it did not take place on the property and did
not involve any members,” Smith said. “Obviously, it is very unfortunate
that it happened at Central Michigan University.”
He said they will do anything they can to support the local chapter.
“We will certainly be following up with the chapter,” Smith said.
“I think at the same time we are allowing the process to go forward with
the local authorities there.”
Sigma Chi President Martin Markaj said he and other fraternity members are helping law enforcement authorities.
“Every member in our organization is cooperating in every way possible, and are trying to help the investigation,” he said.
