Homecoming events to show spirit, unity
A week of decades-long traditions begins today as CMU nears Homecoming weekend.
“This is a great time to have the community come together,” said Houghton Lake senior Lynn Hutchinson, Homecoming coordinator.
Homecoming activities, which date back to 1924, include a parade, a pancake
breakfast, a week-long contest among students, a pep rally and a bonfire.
Activities kick off at noon today with the Central Barbecue on the front lawn of the Bovee University Center.
The Maroon Cup — a friendly competition between teams of students and
organizations who participate in events for spirit points — also starts today
at the BUC with a spirit search, similar to a scavenger hunt.
Three Rivers junior Amanda Haught, Alpha Kappa Psi member, the co-ed business
fraternity, said the Maroon Cup events are good ice-breakers.
“This is a great way to build unity within the fraternity and to get others to recognize the groups that exist,” she said.
The team with the most points receives the Maroon Cup, which is on display downstairs at the UC.
Homecoming Ambassador elections run Monday through Thursday, with the Gold Ambassadors announced Friday at the pep rally.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, students can bring a shirt or hat from rival campuses and receive a free CMU shirt.
Friday evening is the Chippewa Rock Rally, a combination pep rally and
mock rock event. Freshman of the Year and the Gold Ambassadors will be announced
at the rally.
From 7 a.m. to noon Saturday is the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Main St.
Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12-years-old.
All proceeds will go to the Special Olympics softball team.
At 10 a.m. Saturday the Homecoming parade begins in Lot 22, will weave
its way to downtown and end at Sacred Heart Parish, 302 S. Kinney Blvd.
Owosso senior Adam Michels, a member of the Parade Committee, said though
the deadline for applications for the parade was last Monday, applications
will still be accepted.
He said there are 70 floats registered, including some from Mount Pleasant, Midland and Flint.
“We are looking for CMU and the community to participate and have a very good time,” he said.
