Groups help tidy campus

Students covered campus sidewalks with messages in chalk to promote
homecoming events and collected trash to help the beautification
process Tuesday.
Jamie Brown, assistant director of Student Life, said the messages
written in chalk around campus will help promote homecoming activities
at the end of the week.
In the past, she said, students went into the Mount Pleasant
community to clean and do yard work, but this year’s event was focused
on campus to get more people involved.
“Even though grounds does a great job, the students will be cleaning up trash,” Brown said.
The Campus Clean-up was organized by the Maroon Cup Committee to
prepare campus for homecoming, said Jen Cosens, Petosky sophomore.
As volunteers from student organizations left Finch Fieldhouse to
begin cleaning their sections of campus, Cosens said she was excited
about the number of people involved.
“We expected eight groups and a lot more showed up, so we’re happy with the turnout,” she said.
Each of the groups earned points toward the Maroon Cup for having
members participate in the event. The groups were all given a bag
containing a map of their section, sidewalk chalk and a list of things
to write to publicize events.
Some students said they were involved because they wanted to clean and improve the atmosphere on campus.
“I live on campus and it’s a mess,” said Jon Matthews, Gladwin senior. “Since we’re on campus, we should pick it up.”
Matthews said the messages he wrote in sidewalk chalk were a great way to promote events, which he said will be “a blast.”
Livonia sophomore Justin Vacca said a clean campus makes people smile and said he was excited to clean up the trash.
“I am excited, very much so,” Vacca said. “There’s trash all over
the place and it’s nice to see people giving time to clean campus.”
He said he helped promote the event by posting signs in Campbell
Hall and encouraging residents to participate, and was excited by the
turnout.
“I think (the number of people who participated) was fairly decent,” he said. “I was impressed.”
The area surrounding the Towers was cleaned by members of
Alternative Breaks, including Adrian junior Tiffanie Holloway. She said
the organization is focused on volunteering so the Campus Clean-up was
a big event for them.
“We are doing our part to serve the campus,” Holloway said. “I wanted to give back to the community that I get so much from.”
