Recruitment begins for Greeks
The Greeks are getting ready to showcase themselves to prospective
members during formal recruitment this week.
Activities and recruitment have already begun informally at most of
the fraternity houses, but the official start days are Friday for
sororities and Sunday for fraternities.
“We have been recruiting from day one by passing out fliers and
wearing our shirts,” said Ryan Wilczynski, vice president of Sigma Tau
Gamma and Oxford senior. “We are doing things like Monday Night
Football to meet the guys in a laid back setting.”
Kurt Nueske, president of Phi Kappa Tau, wants everyone to have a
good time while breaking down stereotypes.
“It’s a whole different world being in a fraternity because you’re
labeled right away,” the Lake Orion junior said. “We just want the guys
to have fun and show them that frats aren’t only like what they see in
the movies.”
Tom Idema, assistant director of Student Life and Greek Life
adviser, wants students to get out and participate in the upcoming
activities.
“It’s important for students who are thinking about going Greek to
get out and meet all the diverse groups,” Idema said. “You’re missing
out on the experience if you only go to one house.”
The sororities on campus are unable to disclose any information
regarding their formal recruitment.
“The sororities have to be fair and equal in formal recruitment,”
Idema said. “They work very hard to make sure each girl gets to see
every house and meet all the girls.”
Prospective members should know that formal recruitment also is a
dry rush, meaning all students participating in activities at the
houses are expected not to drink.
“We want to meet people on a sober basis,” Wilczynski said. “We take
quality over quantity.”
The fraternities and sororities want students to decide what is
right for them.
“We know that Greek life is not for everyone,” Nueske said.
“Everyone should just get out and get to know each diverse group
because it helps to build character.”
Students who have trouble deciding on a group or decide that Greek
life is not for them should not worry.
“There are over 300 organizations on campus that can satisfy every
student,” Idema said. “My door is always open to new Greeks — or any
student, for that matter.”
