Creative writers at CMU looking to get their work published will
have a chance with the return of the Central Review this fall.
“It’s the work on campus and Central’s voice,” said Madison Heights
senior Andrea Riley. “If you love to write and love this form of
expression, you can submit”
The campus literary magazine had submission forms out by Sept. 21
and the deadline for the fall issue is tentatively scheduled for Oct.
15. Students can submit up to three poems, and fiction and non-fiction
stories can be up to 4,000 words. There is no cost to enter.
This is Riley’s first year as chief editor of the Central Review.
“Poetry is my major and I wanted to do things with creative
writing,” she said. “So I applied for it.”
Applications for the Central Review can be picked up in the Central
Michigan Life office, Moore Hall 436.
Riley said she would set up an e-mail account this year so students
can send their works through e-mail.
There also will be a contest in the poetry and fiction categories. A
$100 prize for the best poem and fiction story picked by the editors
will be awarded. To be eligible, students have to be full-time and not
be involved with student publications.
Riley will have a reading for those published in the Central Review.
“Those in the Central Review will be asked to read,” she said.
“Students will be reading from the magazine.”
Helping out Riley for the fall issue will be assistant poetry editor
Tim Lantz, Mesick senior, and assistant fiction editor Chris Williams,
Troy senior. The spring issue will have Erin Grendon and Mike Shaffer
as assistant editors.
“My hope is to basically create a magazine that represents Central
Michigan University and its voice,” she said. “I really want to
encourage people to submit and not be afraid too. We welcome everyone’s
submissions.”
