It has been said before, but it cannot be said enough: College students
need to vote.
The current lot of Central Michigan University students are part of
a generation known for its lack of interest in politics and its lack of
motivation to vote. Still, this generation has the potential to
influence the results of election — including the presidential election
this November.
The first step to voting is to register, and time is running out.
In Michigan, you must register at least 30 days before an election.
That gives unregistered students until Oct. 4.
Voting is the most basic aspect of living and contributing in a
democracy. It gives the most common of citizens the same power as the
most influential, at least for a day. It gives a person the authority
to declare their beliefs and values.
It is important. Remember, the last election was decided by very few
votes in Florida. Who knows, this year’s Florida may be Michigan.
While you should vote in every election, why not start with this
upcoming one.
Registration is as easy as ever. There are many Web sites that allow
potential voters to register. Here are three of the many:
www.justvote.org,
www.DeclareYourselfcom.com and
www.rockthevote.com.
Whether you are Republican or Democrat, admire Pat Buchanan or Ralph
Nader, or do not know the difference between George W. Bush and John
Kerry, get involved, get knowledgeable — it may surprise you how
refreshing casting a ballot can feel.
And since most of us students procrastinate, register now before it
is too late and Election Day is upon you.
