Bowling Green rolls 38-14 as Chippewas lose another homecoming

Bowling Green’s game plan against Central Michigan was simple — throw the football.

Quarterback Omar Jacobs did just that for BGSU, throwing for 387 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons 38-14 win Saturday.

“We felt that we could throw the football on them and we did,” said BGSU coach Gregg Brandon.

Jacobs main target was junior wide receiver Steve Sanders, who caught six passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns.

Bowling Green scored on its second drive, going 93 yards in nine plays, capped off by a P.J. Pope one yard touchdown run.

The Chippewas had a chance to answer on their ensuing drive, but an 84-yard catch by Tory Humphrey was called back because of an illegal man downfield penalty. The drive resulted in a punt.

“We needed to play nearly a perfect game to win today,” said CMU coach Brian Kelly.

Central’s game was far from perfect as they allowed Jacobs to sit in the pocket and pick apart its weak secondary. Jacobs amassed 462 yards of total offense, and the Falcons as a team totaled 510 yards.

Jemmy Jasmin tied the score for CMU in the second quarter, taking a reverse from Jerry Seymour 25 yards for a touchdown. It was the closest they would get as BGSU scored three unanswered touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

“We did a nice job mixing things up and keeping them off balance,” Brandon said. “I didn’t really think that it was a close game, but it seemed like it because they were always moving the football on us.”

Kent Smith, who was knocked out of the game in the second quarter, came back in the third and scored CMU’s other touchdown on a four yard run. Smith was 17-of-30 for 181 yards and two interceptions.

Seymour continued his dominance, rushing for 155 yards on 28 carries. It was his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game, but he has yet to score a touchdown since Sept. 11 against Michigan State.

“He is an excellent little back,” said BGSU linebacker Jovon Burkes. “We knew we had to dominate on defense to give our offense a chance, and we did.”

The Chippewas next contest is a game at Northern Illinois Saturday.
