Bad weather forced the cancellation of CMU’s final home men’s lacrosse
game of the fall season Wednesday.

CMU was set to play rival Western Michigan, but coach Luke Grisman
decided to cancel the game.

“It is cold and very windy out there, and we usually don’t play when
the weather is like that,” said junior goalkeeper Jake Wolny. “Plus we
have already faced Western twice this year”

Team captain senior Jared Venia is happy to see the fall season come
to an end.

“We have been practicing hard and playing since school started, it
will be a nice break on our bodies,” he said.

Venia said the team had a strong fall season. The team was 6-2.

“Everyone played hard,” Venia. “I have never seen our team go out
there and be intense every second of the game. Coach really kept us in
shape and it showed. Overall it was a great fall and I am very
impressed with our team unity and our level of play.”

Wolny said he was impressed with how the players picked up Grisman’s
new style, especially the younger ones.

“I was very surprised with the new guys, the way that they picked up
the game and coach’s system was impressive,” he said. “It is nice to
have such a talented young core of guys; it’s a promising thing for the
future.”

CMU will still practice every Tuesday and Sunday until early
February. The team will run drills to get them ready for indoor play
and Grisman has them on a new workout program, which consists of a new
lifting regiment.

“If we are going to compete in the CCLA it is vital that we keep our
skills up and stay in shape,” Wolny said. “We are pretty much used to
coach Grisman’s system now, which will greatly help in the CCLA. I
can’t wait for the spring season to start.”

Venia also shared his enthusiasm toward the spring season.

“The team is going out of state three times in the spring,” he said.
“We are currently planning a trip to Florida to play teams like the
University of Florida, Central Florida, South Florida and Wake Forest.
This is a big step for our program — playing teams from around the
country really helps legitimize our team nationally. Everyone is really
excited.”

The team begins spring season Feb. 5 against Purdue.
