Students filled by ‘Pleasant’ food

Decatur junior Chelsea Mead volunteered to serve pizza to a very long
line of hungry guests Wednesday at Alternative Breaks’ fifth annual
Plates of Pleasant fund-raiser.

“I’m helping out because I’m a site leader this year for the South
Dakota trip,” Mead said. “We do raise a lot of money through this
event, and it is a great way to advertise for Alternative Breaks — we
want to let people know what’s out there.”

The event raised more than $900 in a two hour time period in the
Bovee University Center Rotunda. The admission price gave guests access
to food from 17 restaurants, including Buffalo Wild Wings, Roly Poly,
Applebee’s and Papa John’s.

“The $5 was definitely worth it,” said Corunna junior Megan McLosky.
“I really liked the variety of foods.”

While some students were there simply for the food, others were
there for different reasons.

“My roommate is a site leader,” said Howell junior Jenna French.
“I’m here to support the cause and for the food.”

People interested in Alternative Breaks were able to ask questions
and get more information.

“If a student was thinking about going on an Alternative Break, I
would tell them that you are only in college once,” Mead said. “We are
always learning how to better ourselves, and this gives us a chance to
impact other people’s lives.”

Flint senior Kari Hatfield, co-fundraising chairwoman for
Alternative Breaks, said there were approximately 200 people at the
event.

“Unfortunately we had to turn some people away at the very end
because we ran out of food,” Hatfield said. “We can’t really complain
though because we still raised a lot of money. It was a real big
success.”
