Gymnastics home unbeaten streak snapped

The CMU gymnastics team’s 27 match home unbeaten-streak ended Saturday in Rose Arena.

No. 16 Brigham Young University won the non-conference match 194.975-194.525.

“I felt we were a better team all-around than BYU,”said CMU coach Jerry Reighard. “We gave away some points on falls early. It was an uncharacteristic day for us.”

The falls started on the first event when senior Sara Burtinsky couldn’t land her dismount on the vault.

It carried over to the uneven bars and balance beam. Senior Kara Reighard fell off the uneven bars and then Reighard and junior Mattie Crawford fell off the balance beam. Reighard’s score of 9.075 on the uneven bars did not count toward the team score.

“Mentally the falls carried over,” Jerry Reighard said. “The mental edge was off.”

CMU made an effort to overtake BYU on the floor exercise, but a team score of 49.075 wasn’t enough to counter the earlier miscues.

Crawford scored a 9.875 and Burtinsky and sophomore Jules Passy both scored a 9.825. Crawford also scored a 9.9 and the vault.

“We usually come out strong on the vault and we were a little shaky going into the bars anyways,” Burtinsky said. “We just couldn’t get it going today.”

Jerry Reighard said the loss may be the best thing for the team right now.

“I have always said there is nothing wrong with losing,” he said. “In the grand scheme of things it takes us back to reality. The team won’t let it get them down.”

BYU’s Marie-Helene Claveau won the all-around with a score of 3.900.
