More than 100 CMU students makes Who’s Who
CMU’s 112 nominated campus leaders and outstanding students will be
nationally recognized with other students from more than 2,000 other
schools.
They will have their names published in the 2005 edition of “Who’s
Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” It is a
directory, first published in 1934, of students that are outstanding
leaders on campus.
“We had about 150 entries from professors, advisers and friends, for
these outstanding students,” said Jessica Shaddawvine, Westland
sophomore working in the Student Life office. “We had to pick and
choose this year, using the (grade point average) of the student. We
are definitely excited that we had so many entries, though.”
Students are nominated for the honor for their academic achievement,
service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities,
service to the community and potential for continued success.
Professors, advisers, friends and anybody else that wants to recommend
a student is free to.
“I actually just found out that I won the award over spring break,”
said James Fields, Detroit graduate student. “I was so excited that
someone saw something special inside of me to nominate me for this
award.”
Fields is a public administration major getting his master degree.
He works at Minority Student Services, is involved in the Student
Budget Allocation Committee, is a graduate assistant and is a leader of
a Bible study.
Each recognized student will be mentioned in a publication, get an
award from the school, and be qualified for one of three scholarships
in the amounts of $2,000, $3,000 and $5,000.
Shaddawvine said this is the first year in the history of the
publication that they don’t have to be picked for the scholarship, it
is randomly awarded to the students.
CMU has had students entered in the contest in the past win
recognition, but this year there were more than ever nominated. Last
year CMU was allowed to enter 150 students, this year they were allowed
115 and 112 ended up on the list.
The award is prestigious and looked at highly by employers. It is
something students can use for their resumes.
Fields said it’s a great way to be recognized for all the studying,
time management and hard work that he has put into school.
Shaddawvine said this year was a good year for CMU students.
“We are very excited with the publicity and high turnout of
nominations this year,” she said. “We hope to keep a high turnout in
the years to come.”
