CMU art student and Clare junior Nimer Aleck II was chosen for the
student exhibit award by the University Art Gallery Committee.

Aleck has his art on display until Saturday at the West Gallery.

“Nimer Aleck’s work was judged to be innovative and used materials
creatively with potential to have educational impact at CMU,” said
Meghen Jones, University Art Gallery director. “It is a highly
selective and competitive process.”

Aleck’s work, which includes items such as tattered computer
keyboards and drawings on discarded drywall, is meant to make visitors
contemplate their own habits of consumption and waste.

“In this exhibition he has used several different approaches with
discarded material,” Jones said. “It’s almost three different
exhibitions in one.”

Visitors also will find the gallery’s walls are papered with issues
of Central Michigan Life.

“My work … involves an artistic exploration of discarded
materials, breathing new life into recycled objects while maintaining
their original integrity,” Aleck said.

Perhaps the most impressive work of art in the exhibit is a bicycle
made entirely of discarded parts. It is suspended from the
ceiling and rests on a stack of twisting newspapers.
