Event will promote IPC major
Lambda Pi Eta’s Interpersonal and Public Communication Major Night will
give students a chance to learn about many aspects of the major and
minor.
The National Communication Honor Society’s event will take place
from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Moore Hall in the Townsend Kiva.
“What we’re trying to do is to describe the major and career
options. It is a very marketable degree for a number of careers,” said
Michael Papa, chairman of the speech, communications and dramatic arts
department. “We will have printed information and I will be doing an
overview presentation of the major, and faculty members will be there
to discuss the programs.”
At the event, students will be able to meet with on-site advisers
and get information ranging from specific classes to internships in the
field.
There will be representatives from all the departmental student
organizations.
Information also will be available about becoming an undergraduate
teaching assistant and about the Debate/Forensics program.
Major Night is not only open to students currently with an
interpersonal and public communication major or minor, but also those
with a different major who could benefit by a second major in the field.
“The communication skills learned in the IPC major would supplement
most majors very well,” Papa said.
Students also will get an opportunity to learn about the speech
communication graduate program.
According to Leslie Withers, Lambda Pi Eta’s adviser and the
program’s internship coordinator, students with the major or minor
graduate with the necessary skills employers are looking for.
“Employers are looking for students who can speak and write
effectively,” she said.
