Seymour suspended from football team

Sophomore Jerry Seymour was suspended indefinitely from CMU’s football team today after being charged with lying to a grand jury Wednesday.

Seymour will be in court at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Isabella Country Trial Court in Mount Pleasant.

“I have said from day one that anyone charged in connection to the Demarcus Graham case will be suspended,” said football coach Brian Kelly. “He’s been suspended and we clearly are moving on.”

Seymour was a first team Mid-American Conference tailback selection last season.

Kelly said the two had a brief conversation today, when the second-year coach learned of Seymour’s arrest.

Seymour was charged with contempt of court for allegedly lying to Grand Juror and Chief Judge Paul Chamberlain “during testimony Nov. 22 about his movements outside” Shaboom Pub Club, 106 Court St. Pleasant in the early morning of June 25.

An unknown suspect or suspects beat Graham, 26, into a comma. The Flint native later died July 14 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw.

Seymour is the first active football player to be charged. Former player Jonathon Nelson is currently serving a 30-day sentence for contempt of court. Former player Richard Kiel was jailed in January for 30 days after being charged with lying to the grand jury.

Flint junior Kassondra Ryals and West Bloomfield junior Charmaine Patton also served 30 days in jail in December for lying to Chamberlain.
