Students interested in going back in time gathered Friday evening for a
mock anthropology dig sponsored by the Anthropology Club.
A mock dig is a simplified version of a real dig. The students had
two sand boxes set up for them with about 25 hidden “artifacts” in each
box. They had to sift through the sand to find the items and then
catalog them.
Some of the artifacts included small lizards, shells and money.
“We are doing this for experience,” Grayling freshman and club
vice-president Erin Westman said. “We are all anthro majors who are
trying to get the feel for field work.”
The club also watched movies including “Indiana Jones” and ate pizza.
“It’s just an activity for us to do together,” Brighton sophomore
Jessica Larkins said.
This was the club’s first major event of the year. The group
traveled to Chicago last fall to a field museum.
“We hope to make this an annual event and eventually get bigger and
better,” said Rosslyn Fraley, Mount Pleasant freshman and club
president.
The club will travel to the Midland Museum of Arts to see an
Egyptian exhibit later this month and will host Athena McLean to speak
about her book Wednesday.
The Anthropology Club meets at 5 p.m. Tuesdays in Anspach 306 or
311, depending on which room is available.
