Taste of Latin to spice up CMU

Want to taste a little bit of Latin?

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Bovee University Center will
host Taste of Latin Culture

Taste of Latin culture, one of the many events celebrating Hispanic
Heritage month, will take place Wednesday.

The event will be held in the UC Rotunda Terrace rooms from 5 to 7
p.m.

“The purpose of this event is for Hispanic heritage month to promote
Hispanic culture,” said Tamika Martinez, assistant director of minority
student services. “It’s a fun awareness program about culture.”

The Taste of Culture event showcases food from Puerto Rico, the
Caribbean, Mexico, Venezuela and others. Some of the different dishes
that will be there are tres leches cake — which means three milks cake.

There will also be rice and black beans, carne asada, which is
grilled steak served with tortillas and baha bean salad.

“This is a traditional event; we try to have a food taster. People
like to be exposed to culture through food,” Martinez said. “Everyone
likes exotic things.”

In addition to the food, there also will be live entertainment.
Mocoyani Izel, a Detroit-based dance group will be performing Mexican
folklore dances.

At the event, there also will be a presentation on Cesar Chavez, who
was a big activist for Hispanic-America rights and was involved in farm
labor.

“There’s no reason not to come. There will be great food, company
and entertainment. It’s a great way for students to experience food
outside the dining hall,” Martinez said.

There are different groups on campus that help organize these events
including Sigma Lamda Gamma, Sigma Lamda Beta and the Latin cultural
organization all worked together to coordinate and execute these events.

“This activity grows in big numbers every year. The dance allows for
student participation. It’s a large event and we encourage students to
come and take part in it,” said Traci Guinn, director of student
minority services.

The Taste of culture event is open to everyone, although there is a
small fee to cover the food and entertainment. The cost for students is
$3 and faculty/public pay $5.
