Many college students like to party – so what better than to have a
credited course that allows students to do so?
A returning Recreations, Parks, and Leisure Services Administration
course, RPL 430, calls for students to throw parties and plan other
events to raise money for charity.
“The culmination of the class is for the students to put on a
program that is profitable, and the money has to be donated to
charity,” said Tim Otteman, the physical education and sport instructor
teaching the class.
This year, the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish
Foundation and Rock For Kids will benefit from the money that is raised.
“They have done a great job of running the events and raising
money,” Otteman said. “In the 2004-2005 school year they raised more
than $8,000.”
Program activities this year include a battle of the bands, a
pancake breakfast, a Halloween fun walk, a picnic, an open mic night
and a graffiti party.
“These kinds of classes are beneficial for me,” said Sterling
Heights freshman Derek Collard. “I can’t be cooped up in an office all
day. The classes are much more laid back.”
Otteman said community members often get involved with the student
programs as well, providing them a way to see college students in a
different light.
“This class is a good idea because it provides less stressful
classroom environments,” said Westland freshman Jessica Sanford.
