VOX rocks to an all-female lineup
Planned Parenthood’s third VOX Rocks concert Friday had an all-female
lineup.
The concert, held at the Wesley Foundation, 1400 S. Washington St.,
featured local www.MySpace.com musicians, including Ann Arbor folk
group Lazy Sunday and Grand Rapids folk singers Kristy Hanson and Lux
Land.
Midland freshman Vanessa Marie Spitzer also played at the concert.
Spitzer opened the event playing guitar and banjo.
Students who attended the concert said they liked Spitzer’s
performance.
“It’s different than what you hear when you go to other places. It’s
deeper than a lot of stuff,” said Jacqui Cornwell, Lapeer sophomore.
Wixom sophomore Rachel Weisserman said Spitzer’s lyrics were clever,
heartfelt and moving.
“Vanessa was really good,” Weisserman said.
Spitzer said she writes all her own songs, including one about her
girlfriend getting a lap dance by a male stripper.
The Gay Straight Alliance and the Vagina Monologues attended and
handed out information packets throughout the event.
The Vagina Monologues cast also sold candles to raise money for
Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates.
VOX President Rachel Prevatt used MySpace to contact the musicians.
“It’s a good way to get your music out there,” the Midland senior
said.
