Five wrestlers advance at NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY _” Sophomores Christian Sinnott and Wynn Michalak capped off a solid first session for the wrestling team Thursday at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City.

Five CMU wrestlers advanced to the second round of the championship bracket.

Sinnott avenged a loss earlier in the season and Michalak won on a major decision.

“The best win of the round was Christian Sinnott,” said coach Tom Borrelli. “It’s a great turnaround for Christian.”

Sinnott beat Michigan’s Tyrel Todd 6-4 in sudden victory at 184 pounds. He got in on a single-leg shot and swept Todd’s leg to get the win.

“He kept giving (the single-leg shot) to me,” Sinnott said. “I saw him putting that right leg back so I just kept going.”

Sinnott wrestles No. 4 seed Joseph Mazzurco of Cornell in the second round.

Michalak, the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds, beat Oregon State’s Dan Pitsch 12-3. Pitsch scored a two-point takedown but Michalak quickly scored a reversal and rode Pitsch the rest of the first period. Michalak scored three takedowns in the second and third to win.

Senior 133-pounder Jason Borrelli upset California-Poly’s No. 10 seed Darrell Vasquez 7-4 in the first round. Borrelli scored a takedown and an escape in both the first and second periods.

“I’m just happy for him, especially after the MAC Tournament,” Tom Borrelli said. “He bounced back well.”

Jason Borrelli takes on Penn State’s No. 10 seed Jake Strayer in the second round.

Sophomore 125-pounder Luke Smith beat Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Javier Maldonado 4-1 in his opening round match. Smith scored a takedown just before going out of bounds in the first period.

Smith wrestles Wyoming’s Bryce Leonhardt next. The unseeded Leonhardt upset Oklahoma State’s No. 6 seed Coleman Scott in the first round.

Senior 149-pounder Mark DiSalvo beat Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Aaron Martin 10-5. DiSalvo scored a takedown early in first period and added another later in the period. He scored another takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining in the match and added a point for ride time advantage.

DiSalvo will wrestle No. 12 seed Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania.

Sophomore 174-pounder Brandon Sinnott was pinned by No. 3 seed Mark Perry of Iowa at 3:45. Sinnott trailed 5-0, but scored a two-point reversal late in the first period. Perry responded with a reversal of his own from the down position and eventually pinned Sinnott.

Sinnott drops to the consolation bracket where he wrestles Illinois’ Donald Reynolds.
The University of California Davis’ Derek Moore beat sophomore Brandon Carter by fall at 141 pounds. Moore led 12-0 before pinning Carter at 4:30.

Carter awaits the winner of Penn State’s Dewitt Driscoll and Pennsylvania’s Cesar Grajales in the consolation bracket.
