Michalak, DiSalvo earn All-America honors with eighth place finish
OKLAHOMA CITY – Senior Mark DiSalvo and sophomore Wynn Michalak both ended their seasons on a bittersweet note Saturday at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
They both lost their seventh place matches, but still
earned their second consecutive All-America honors.
“Being an All-American is a great accomplishment,”
DiSalvo said. “It’s satisfying, but on the other hand
when you train to achieve so much more and it doesn’t
happen, you’re disappointed.”
DiSalvo was pinned by Edinboro’s Gregor Gillespie at
6:22 in the seventh place match at 149 pounds.
Gillespie led 4-2 when he got the fall. After a
scoreless first period, DiSalvo scored a two-point
reversal from the down position. Gillespie answered
with a reversal and two-point near fall later in the
second period before pinning DiSalvo in the third.
DiSalvo finishes the tournament at 3-3 in eighth
place. It is his second consecutive All-America honor.
Michalak lost 5-3 to Arizona State’s Ryan Bader at 197
pounds. Bader scored two takedowns in the first
period.
The sophomore No.1 seed went 4-3 in the tournament,
and also finishes in eighth place.
CMU finished the tournament in 26th place with 26
points.
“I feel like we’ve got a lot of work to do to get
ready for this tournament next year,” said coach Tom
Borrelli. “We had a great regular season, we had a
good MAC Tournament but we’ve got a lot of work to do
to be good in this tournament in the future.”
