One student will spend her summer in Washington, D.C., learning about
long-term care administration for senior citizens.

Stephanie Demarest, Battle Creek senior, recently was accepted into
a summer internship program offered through the National Society of
Collegiate Scholars.

Demarest current is the community service chairwoman for CMU’s
chapter of NSCS.

“It’s going to be an awesome experience and I’m excited to see where
it leads,” she said.

Demarest said she hopes to focus her future on advocating for
elderly rights, one of the reasons she decided to go to Washington,
D.C., for her internship.

She said she hopes this experience will help her with future career
goals.

NSCS is an honors organization encouraging leadership through
community service.

The Distinguished Scholars Summer Internship, the program Demarest
will be part of, only is available through NSCS.

Last year only 25 percent of applicants were accepted on a national
level.

Demarest said she found out about the opportunity from the NSCS Web
site. She said she had to fill out a questionnaire and send a letter or
recommendation and resume.

Brian Palmer, NSCS adviser and director of library development
and community outreach, said Demarest will go far.

“She has a lot of drive,” Palmer said. “Were happy to have her on
the NSCS board and she does a lot for CMU.”

Demarest organizes all community service opportunities within NSCS
and set up a liaison with Big Brothers, Big Sisters this year.

She currently works with the adult program at the Isabella County
Medical Care Facility, 1222 North Drive.

Palmer said he is sure Demarest will take on a leadership position
one day.

“Wherever she goes she’ll do really well,” he said.
