Long weekend turns into losses for club hockey

The club hockey team was forced to play four games in three days last
weekend because of a scheduling conflict.

As a result, the team struggled to a 1-2-1 record.

The team was supposed to play DePaul University on Friday and
Saturday, and Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday.

Instead it played FGCU Friday night and Saturday afternoon. It also
played DePaul Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

“It’s mostly just mental preparation,” said coach Alex Wiesenberger.
“We have a young team that can rebound physically.”

CMU could only salvage a 4-2 win against DePaul Sunday.

The game was tied for two periods until the third when freshman Mike
Lesnau intercepted a DePaul pass near the blue line and sprinted up the
ice to score the game-winning goal.

On Saturday, the team finished the doubleheader with a 5-5 tie to
DePaul.

CMU couldn’t convert on its 14 shots in overtime, but sophomore
goalie Shaun Stewart stopped all seven of DePaul’s scoring chances.

Central lost 5-3 to FGCU in Saturday’s first game.

CMU came out with an offensive attitude, taking a 2-0 lead into the
first intermission. It outshot FGCU 15-6.

But FGCU tied the game on two power play goals in the second.

FGCU took a 3-2 lead early in the third, but freshman Greg Martin
scored to tie the game.

But FGCU scored the games last two goals.

“You just have to keep it positive and keep playing the game,” said
senior captain Craig Lipar after the team’s Saturday doubleheader.

Despite the five goals, senior goalie Mike Jakubik stopped 31 shots.

“We had a lot of penalties and they got some lucky bounces, but you
can’t let it bother you,” Jakubik said. “ You have to just move on and
play harder next time.”

CMU was handed its first loss of the season Friday in a 4-1 loss to
FGCU 4-1.

The team plays Friday against Illinois.
